Quinnesec, Michigan

Quinnesec is located on US-2 midway between Iron Mountain and Norway in Dickinson County.  Founded in 1858.  Kwin-ness-sec - “Smoking River” - a village near the falls of the Niagara, Wisconsin on the Menominee River. Quinnesec Falls - Be-Kew-na-se-je-wan, “Smoky Falls.”  John L. Bell discovered the Quinnesec Mine in 1871 and successfully developed it.  A station of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad.  First in Menominee County, it was transferred to Dickinson County on October 1, 1871.  The name is Indian for smokey waters, referring to the mist hanging over the nearby Menominee River.  Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
