Menominee is located on US-41 in Menominee County. Indian for wild rice country. Farnsworth & Brush built the first sawmill in the area in 1836, soon followed by others. The settlement was given a post office on May 23, 1863, with Norman Soule as its first postmaster. The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad reached here in 1871. Incorporated as a city in 1883. Named after the Indian tribe from whom the federal government obtained the remainder of the Upper Peninsula by treaty in 1836.
