Laurium, Michigan

Until 1895 Laurium was known as Calumet. In 1929 that later name was adopted by the nearby town of Calumet, Michigan, formerly known as "Red Jacket". The population in 1890 was 1159 people; In 1900 5,643, of whom 2286 were foreign-born; In 1904 7653; In 1910 8537. Laurium is in one of the most productive copper districts in the United States, and copper mining is its chief industry. Immediately west of Laurium is the famous Calumet and Hecla mine. The village was formerly named Calumet, and was incorporated under that name in 1889, but in 1895 its name was changed by the legislature to Laurium, in allusion to the mineral wealth of Laurium in Greece.  Noted 20th Century football player George Gipp ("the Gipper") was born in Laurium. A small memorial for the football legend is located on the corner of Lake Linden Avenue and Tamarack Street in Laurium.  The Palestra was a noted hockey arena, built in Laurium in 1904. It is thought to have been the first purpose-built indoor hockey venue in the United States. In 1921, the entire arena was moved to Marquette, Michigan and remained there until it was torn down in 1974.
