Ishpeming is located in central Marquette County. Ishpeming is home to the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum. Population: 7,200. The site was known in the early mining days as the Lake Superior Location, taking its name from its parent, the Lake Superior Mine; first settled in 1856, it took the name of Ishpeming (Chippewa for heaven or high place) in 1862. Captain Gilbert D. Johnson became its first postmaster on February 17, 1863. Incorporated as a village in 1871 and as a city in 1873.
