Ironwood is located off US-2 in Gogebic County. I was named after a geologist by the name of Wood who discovered the vast iron ore deposit of the Gogebic Iron Range, the third such range of iron deposits in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Ironwood is the western most spot of Michigan (Farther west than St. Louis, Missouri) and the largest city on the Gogebic Range. A plethora of year around outdoor activities have made tourism a major industry. The city boasts 53' tall Hiawatha, the World's Tallest Indian who will celebrate 40 years this summer, the restored 1928 Historic Ironwood Theatre, the Old Depot Park Museum and a small but quaint downtown shopping district.
