Hancock is located at the junction of US-41 and M-26 in Houghton County. It is home of Finlandia University, the only Finnish American College in America. In 1846, a log cabin was built here to hold the Ruggles mineral claim. Christopher C. Douglas owned the land and came to live on it in 1852. He sold it to the Quincy Mining Company, of which he was an agent. Incorporated as a village in 1875 and as a city in 1903. Named for John Hancock, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
