First settled in succession by four lumber firms: The Fence River Company, The Kirby Carpenter Company, Ludington, Wells & Van Shaick and Hamilton & Merriman. The town was named for J. Nathan Faithorn, an official of the Wisconsin & Michigan Railroad which came through here in 1894. Its station, named Faithorn Junction, was the crossing point of the W. & M. and the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railroads. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
