Copper is what built the Keweenaw from remote forests to thriving cosmopolitan communities. Calumet, in the heart of the Copper Country, was 60,000 strong by 1890. When copper production declined, however, so did the copper-dependent economic structure of the Keweenaw. Now, the headquarters of the Keweenaw National Historical Park, Calumet is working not only to preserve its rich history and architecture but also to restore the vibrancy of the community through its Main Street Program. Calumet is French for pipe, referring to the Indian Peace Pipe. The entire downtown section of the community is on the National Register and contains many handsome sandstone mining era buildings. Beginning as a civil township in 1866, the village developed around the mines of the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company and was then composed mainly of the officers and employees. Gradually it composed of the surrounding communities of Laurium, Hecla and South Hecla, and in 1929, united with the incorporated village of Red Jacket under the name of Calumet. A calumet was the clay stone bowl of the Indian peace pipe. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
