Bruce Crossing is located at the junction of US-45 and M-28 in Ontonagon County. Originally named Military Road, the name was changed in Bruce Crossing on March 19, 1889. August Neuman built a sawmill here and a town formed around it. Donald M. Bruce had a store near where the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad crossed the old Military Road, and when he was named the first postmaster on March 5, 1888, it was called Bruce's Crossing. Since August 13, 1891, the name has been Bruce Crossing. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
