Bete Grise

The name is French for grey beast and is believed to have been so named by some one who saw one of the shore, though some hold that the name is derived from the outline of the bay, or the shore, or the crest of the hills along it.  Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.

Built in 1895, this lighthouse and its reservation remain unchanged from that time. Plans are underway to completely restore all the out-buildings. We have put together one of the most detailed collections of original maps of the Great Lakes and the Keweenaw Peninsula ever amassed.
