Amasa is an unincorporated community within the Hemetite township, situated on U.S. Highway 141 where it crosses the Hemlock River, about 15 miles from the Wisconsin border. The present pronounciation of Finnish version of the Biblical name Ama’sa. Named for an early iron mine owner, Amasa Porter. The well known Porter mine was one of his holdings.
