A station on the Mineral Range Railroad, in Allouez Township. The village was founded by John Bosch in 1904. Lawyer James a. Hamilton became its first postmaster on February 5, 1909, in which year it was incorporated as a village. Due to the abundance of beavers in the area it was named Ahmeek, Chippewa for beaver. Informational excerpts from Michigan Place Names, by Walter Romig, L.H.D.
